GREEK FOOTBALL AFFECTED BY SCANDAL

A major scandal has broke out in Greek football that is causing worry for the FIFA. The deputy culture minister, Giorgos Nikitiadis, described the alleged scandal as "the darkest page in the history of Greek football".

He promised the investigation to clean up the sport would go "as deep and as high as necessary".

Ten suspects were arrested and detained earlier in the week.

GREEK FA WARNED FOR VIOLENCE

The Greek Football Federation has been warned by the government after violent crowd activities have forced abandonment.

Greek government has made it clear that it would stop all the fundings to the football federation of Greece if it fails to stop the improper conduct that is currently surrounding Greek football.

GREEK PRESIDENT SLAMMS VIOLENCE

Greek President Karolos Papoulias has said that his country should immediately end the violence and football.

During a meeting with Greek football federation president Sophocles Pilavios, Papoulias called for "an end to this misery" and for "work to be done and not just decisions."

Pilavios delivered to Papoulias a dossier with proposals from the federation for tackling the violence.

"I met with Mr. Papoulias to inform him about what is happening and he is worried and angry about the violence at the football matches," Pilavios said.

CASTILLO BACK IN GREECE

Mexico striker Nery Castillo has returned to Greece after he signed a new six months loan deal with Aris. The 26-year-old Mexico international had a loan spell with Manchester City in 2008 and scored 30 goals during a seven-year spell with Olympiakos Pireaus.

"I am coming to a big club such as Aris with a great hopes of playing good football. For me this constitutes an opportunity to return to Greece and show what I can achieve," Castillo said in a statement.

"I will give everything for Aris to achieve its targets in Greece and Europe."

GREEK SACKING COACHES

Greek clubs are reportedly treading a fine line after sacking 24 coaches in 12 years. The quote came from Alberto Malesani, former manager of Panathinaikos, who uttered the line during an infamous rant in which he attacked journalists and fans who had been critical of his work at the club that season. He was sacked before it ended.

PANATHANAIKOS TOP OF THE GREECE STANDINGS

Panathinaikos are currently on the top of the Greece league tables after a 1-1 draw with Olympiakos. Panathinaikos fell behind after seven minutes to a goal by Daniel Cousin at the Olympic Stadium but Djibril Cisse equalised for the Greens in the 22nd with his eighth of the season.

Luis Garcia had a chance to win the game but hit the post in the fifth minute of added time.

The point moved the champions level on 21 points with Olympiacos, who are scheduled to play the second half of their match with Ergotelis on Sunday, but Panathinaikos are top because of a better head-to-head record.

GEKAS QUITS GREECE

Greek striker Fanis Gekas has announced his retirement from Greek International football. "After some long thinking I have decided to stop playing for the national team, due to certain special conditions created within the squad and which I have made known to those responsible for the team," the 30-year-old Eintracht Frankfurt striker said.

"I want to wish success to Greece and my team mates and thank everyone." He is the third player to quit the national team over the past month after club team mate Yiannis Amanatidis and Liverpool defender Sotiris Kyrgiakos.

GREECE ANNOUNCES TERMS FOR GEORGIA MATCH

Greece has announced its terms and conditions for the Euro 2012 qualifying match with Georgia. In view of the struggle of the National Men's Team with that of Georgia on the qualifying round of the 2012 European Championship Friday 03/09/2010 at 21:45 in golf "C. Kara, the Greek Football Federation announces the following:

-Holders of tickets should be directed to the door stating the ticket alone. Event to enter the stadium from a different port than the one on the ticket there. Upon entering the stadium, the ticket holder should be directed and occupies the position on the ticket only.

SANTOS APPOINTED AS NEW COACH

Portugal's Fernando Santos has been appointed as the new coach of Greece. The executive board of the Greek Football Federation (EPO) on Thursday unanimously voted to appoint Santos to the post for the next two years, taking the team through to the Euro 2012 qualification round.

An announcement by EPO said that Santos will be giving a press conference on Friday.

Santos, 55, will be getting a reported 500,000 euros a year for coaching the squad, about half of what the Greeks were giving Rehhagel.
