SAMARAS NETS TITLE

Celtic have once again managed to win the Scottish league and it was largely down to the goal scoring exploits of Greece international Georgios Samaras. The striker has been the talisman for Celtic in the last six years, but future could hold a different destination for the striker. He is out of contract at the end of the season and it is still not known whether he would sign a new contract or not. Celtic manager Neil Lennon also has expressed his concerned about keeping Samaras, who has scored nine goals in 31 matches this season.

The arrival of the Griffiths has threatened his first-team spot, but the experience of the former Manchester City man will prove crucial over the course of the next few campaigns. Celtic are expected to dominate league football without any trouble, but the real test for Lennon and his men will come in the Champions League. At such times, the presence of an experienced player like Georgios Samaras will prove to be beneficial. Samaras will be one of the players to watch at the World Cup, as he is likely to be with the Greece team.

Greece have an opportunity to reach the knockout stages of the tournament, but with a fit and firing Samaras, they could spring a surprise.

“It’s still open to debate at the minute. There is no forward movement on whether he stays or goes. From my point of view I would like to keep him as he brings something different to the team, but Sami will have his own perspective on that. There may be a bit of movement yet but at the moment it looks like he won’t be here next season, but while he is I think he owes it to the supporters to show he is still a quality player,” said Lennon.
