Sergio Markarian says that the national team should be attacking a lot more

Newly appointed Greece manager, Sergio Markarian says that the national team should be attacking a lot more if they are to improve their position in the Euro 2016 qualifying group.

Greece parted company with Claudio Ranieri after a few months in charge. The national team had begun the Euro 2016 qualifying campaign in disastrous circumstances under the management of the former Chelsea boss. They have failed to recover from this poor form even after the appointment of Markarian. His first game in charge ended in a 0-0 draw with Hungary. A more crucial encounter awaits the national team in a few days when they take on Faroe Islands.

This is a great opportunity for Greece to take their first win of the qualification campaign. Already the prospect of reaching the finals in France looks extremely difficult since a six-point advantage separates them from Hungary, who occupy the final qualification spot. Even Hungary will not be able to reach the finals automatically as they will have to go through a play-off stage.

At this moment, even this looks promising for Greece, who have taken only two points from the five matches. Faroe Islands are regarded as the minnows of football and even they have secured three points until now.

“We know it is a very difficult time and we need a big effort, but I believe in the players and the chances that we have. With a good effort and cooperation we will do well. But we are optimistic and will try our best. We want to give the Greeks joy at this difficult time for them. In the past Greece had a style, good defense and goals in the counter attacks. With time this style has been lost. We must move forward. Good soccer means good defense and good offense,” said the former coach Paraguay.
